Originally recognized as the “English Empire” style, this was eventually named after its innovator- Prince Regent of England.

This style guide owes a lot to the English Empire, with more refinements being added from time to time to suit the tastes of people. Return to Home Furniture Page

The most distinctive feature of these styles is use of very simple lines, bold contours and sleek surfaces of floorings, table tops and furniture. Innovations include stylistic and intimate interiors, placement of en suite furniture, strategically placed ornaments, profuse use of fabrics such as silk and flowered chintz and seductive colors drawn from antique resources. This style guide is getting popular day by day, designers reviving them regularly for its period resonance.

Regency interiors are extremely attractive and have an atmosphere and their own dignity. The most common style elements are those belonging to Georgian influence and it relied on extreme sophistication:

Harmony and symmetry
Airiness, space and light
Pale color scheme and woodwork
Delicate furniture

Regency color schemes include burgundy, sage green and blue grey but, as the style developed, they became lighter and included pea green, sky or Oxford blue, soft grey, dusky pink and a flat white or stone. Other color palette includes strong bright colors on walls with stenciled motifs. Fabulous black gilt pieces and amazing day beds and chaises are most common in these homes. Floors will be bare floorboards covered with Oriental rugs. Posh houses sport stone or marble floors in pale colors, perhaps a keystone pattern. Walls are paneled; cornice will be painted the same shade as the walls but, in case of painted walls, paint the cornice to blend in with the ceiling.

Moldings are perfectly made - ceilings might have ribbons and swags, classical figures and urns. For soft furnishings, look for glazed cotton fabrics with small sprigs of flowers. The same fabric would have been used for both the upholstery and curtains. Armchairs and divans have loose covers made from cheap ticking or striped linen. Curtains often had pagoda style pelmets on top. Erect chandeliers made from glass, metal and wood with curved arms like an octopus for a centerpiece. Elsewhere, use wall lights in brass, silver, or silvered wood or a simple candle flame bulb.

Furniture should be delicate - wing chairs and chairs with hoop or shield backs are typical. Fireplaces are the focal point of a room. They should be elegant with basket grates, cast iron backs and decorated fronts featuring swags, urns, and medallions, perhaps flanked with classical pillars. Add a fire screen painted to match the room or featuring a trompe. Decorative objects can include screens, fans, porcelain and lacquer work from the Orient and bronze ornaments. Hang pictures in formal groupings, flanking the fireplace.

These rooms sport large, grand spaces, high ceiling, columns and moldings. The entire ambience invokes the memories of formal settings like grand libraries and state dining rooms. The interiors are not only wonderful; it feels great for making us feel so special to live in a fabulous ambience. A home decorated with this Regency setting is probably the most innovated of all home decorating concepts.
